Trinity Dominate Royal to Take Commanding First-Leg Lead in 80th Bradby Shield

Trinity College, Kandy produced a clinical second-half performance to defeat Royal College, Colombo 33-10 in the first leg of the historic 80th Bradby Shield Encounter at the Royal Sports Complex on Saturday, taking a commanding 23-point aggregate advantage into the return leg in Kandy later this month.

The eagerly anticipated encounter lived up to its reputation as one of Sri Lanka’s greatest school rugby rivalries, with Royal making the brighter start in front of their home supporters. The hosts opened the scoring through a penalty in the 13th minute to edge ahead 3-0 and looked confident during the opening exchanges.

Trinity, however, gradually settled into the contest and began to dominate possession. Their persistence paid off in the 23rd minute when they crossed for a superb converted try to take a 7-3 lead. Although both teams created further opportunities before halftime, neither side was able to add to the scoreboard, leaving the visitors with a narrow four-point advantage at the break.

Royal came out strongly after the restart and briefly regained the lead with a well-worked converted try, moving ahead 10-7 and raising hopes of a memorable home victory.

From that point onwards, it was all Trinity.

The visitors took complete control of the match through powerful forward play, disciplined defence and sharp attacking movements. Trinity crossed the whitewash four more times without reply, overwhelming the Royal defence and silencing the home crowd. Their ability to convert pressure into points highlighted why they entered the Bradby as one of the country’s strongest school rugby sides this season.

Royal struggled to maintain possession during the closing stages and were repeatedly forced onto the defensive as Trinity’s forwards dominated the breakdown while their backs capitalised on the space created. The visitors’ defensive organisation also prevented Royal from mounting any meaningful comeback.

The emphatic 33-10 victory gives Trinity a significant 23-point cushion heading into the second leg, scheduled to be played in Kandy on 25 July, where the Lions will be favourites to reclaim the prestigious Bradby Shield. Royal, meanwhile, face the daunting challenge of overturning a substantial aggregate deficit if they are to retain the coveted trophy.

The result also reinforces Trinity’s outstanding form in 2026 and places them firmly in control of one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated school sporting traditions as the 80th edition of the Bradby Shield heads towards its decisive second leg.
