The Modern Pentathlon Federation of Sri Lanka (MPFSL) is proud to announce that Sri Lankan pentathlete Gayani K. K. Dassanayaka has been selected to represent Sri Lanka at the upcoming UIPM World Championship, to be held in Guiyang, China, from 24–31 August 2026.
This is the second UIPM World Championship in which Sri Lankan pentathletes have competed this year, marking another important milestone in the continued development and international exposure of Sri Lankan Modern Pentathlon.
The championship features the full five-discipline Modern Pentathlon competition and will bring together athletes from more than 20 countries, with over 200 competitors expected to participate. Results will contribute valuable UIPM World Ranking points, making this competition particularly important for Gayani ahead of the upcoming Asian Games in Japan.
For Gayani, this championship will provide valuable international competition experience, exposure to world-class athletes, and an opportunity to improve her World Ranking and competitive readiness before the 2026 Asian Games.
Modern Pentathlon was introduced and developed in Sri Lanka in 2017, initially with two disciplines. Through the continuous efforts of the MPFSL, we achieved a major milestone in 2025 by establishing all five disciplines — Swimming, Fencing, Obstacle, Laser Run, and the combined modern pentathlon format — and producing Sri Lankan athletes capable of competing as full pentathletes on the international stage.
Today, Sri Lankan athletes are included in the UIPM World Ranking, which is a proud achievement for our country and reflects the remarkable progress made in the sport over the past several years.
Two Sri Lankan athletes have already qualified to compete at the upcoming Asian Games in Japan in September 2026, where they will represent Sri Lanka at the highest level of Asian multi-sport competition.
The Federation also gratefully acknowledges the support extended by the Hon. Minister towards the national training programme and the establishment and maintenance of the national training pool, which is being utilised to prepare our athletes specifically for the Asian Games.
The participation of Gayani Dassanayaka at the UIPM World Championship in Guiyang is another significant step in the journey of Sri Lankan Modern Pentathlon. We believe this experience will strengthen her confidence, international exposure, and competitive readiness as she moves towards our main target — the 2026 Asian Games.
We wish Gayani Dassanayaka every success in Guiyang and hope she will proudly carry the Sri Lankan flag on the world stage.
