24 new records set at the National Junior Athletics Championships

The athletes managed to create 24 new records at the 62nd National Junior Athletics Championships that concluded yesterday at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Diyagama, organized by the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka.

The tournament was held under 4 age groups, namely 16, 18, 20 and Under 23. Lakshya Sandali of the Royal International School, Kuranagala, showed outstanding performance by setting 2 new records.

Competing in the under-16 age group, she set records by completing the 100m hurdles in 14.56 seconds and the 300m hurdles in 44.81 seconds, and also managed to win second place in the 100m event. Sandali also won the Under-16 Female Athlete of the Year award in this tournament. The Under-16 Female Athlete of the Year award went to D.A.S. Shamalkaya of Gonagala Maha Vidyalaya, Bentota, who showed a performance of 7.01 meters in the long jump event.

In the Under-18 age group, W.T.M. Wanshanayake of Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya, who completed the 200m in 25.08 seconds, was awarded the best girl, while W.A.K. Oshada of Kularatna Central Maha Vidyalaya, Ratnapura, who won the 110m hurdles in 13.99 seconds, setting a new competition record, was awarded the best athlete.

W.K. Kaushalya Perera of Taxila College, Horana won the awards for the best female and male athlete under 20 years of age, finishing the long jump with a time of 6.06 meters and M.M.S. Nimasha of Sri Devananda College won the awards for the best female and male athlete respectively, while in the under 23 age group, H.R.D.S. Ranasgalla of the Army won the long jump with a time of 6.28 meters and A.A.K. Liyanage of Ambagamuwa College won the awards for the best female and male athlete after finishing the 400 meters hurdles in 49.95 seconds.
