Sri Lanka’s quest to regain the Asian Netball Championship crown came to a disappointing end on Friday as they suffered a heavy 82-54 defeat to arch-rivals Singapore in the first semi-final of the 14th Asian Netball Championship in Hong Kong.
The defeat was particularly painful for Sri Lanka, who had already suffered at the hands of Singapore during the group stage. Singapore won that earlier encounter 67-51, and once again demonstrated their superiority when the two sides met with a place in the final at stake.
Sri Lanka entered the semi-final determined to produce a stronger performance and overturn their earlier defeat. However, Singapore quickly established control and maintained their advantage throughout the contest, leaving Sri Lanka unable to find the consistency required against one of Asia’s strongest netball teams.
Singapore took command in the opening quarter, finishing 20-11 ahead. Sri Lanka struggled to match Singapore’s attacking efficiency, while the Singaporean shooters converted their opportunities with greater accuracy and composure.
The second quarter saw Singapore extend their advantage further. They added another 19 goals while Sri Lanka managed 14, sending Singapore into the half-time interval with a 39-25 lead. With a 14-goal advantage, Singapore had placed themselves firmly in control of the semi-final.
Sri Lanka needed a dramatic response after the interval, but instead Singapore produced their most dominant quarter of the match. They scored 24 goals in the third quarter compared with Sri Lanka’s 15, stretching their lead to 63-40.
The final quarter followed a similar pattern. Singapore continued to attack aggressively and added another 19 goals, while Sri Lanka scored 14. Singapore eventually completed an emphatic 82-54 victory, winning the semi-final by 28 goals.
The result also highlighted the significant improvement Singapore made between the two encounters. Having defeated Sri Lanka by 16 goals in the group stage, Singapore increased their winning margin to 28 goals in the semi-final and showed greater attacking strength when the pressure was at its highest.
For Sri Lanka, the defeat brings an end to their hopes of reclaiming the Asian championship title. The team had shown flashes of quality during the tournament, but the loss to Singapore exposed areas that will need attention, particularly when facing high-pressure matches against top-ranked regional opponents.
Singapore’s consistency across all four quarters ultimately proved decisive. Their ability to maintain a high scoring rate prevented Sri Lanka from building any sustained momentum and ensured that the semi-final never developed into the closely fought contest Sri Lanka had hoped for.
While the result will undoubtedly be disappointing for the Sri Lankan players and supporters, the campaign also provides valuable lessons for the future. The challenge now will be to assess the shortcomings exposed against Singapore and build a stronger side capable of competing consistently at the highest level of Asian netball.
Sri Lanka’s dream of regaining the Asian crown may have ended in Hong Kong, but the lessons from this campaign could become an important part of the team’s journey towards future success.
