Sri Lanka and India will launch another important chapter in their Test rivalry when they meet tomorrow at the Galle International Cricket Stadium in the opening Test of their two-match series, with valuable ICC World Test Championship points at stake.
The first Test, beginning on August 15, marks India’s return to Sri Lanka for a Test series after eight years and provides both teams with an opportunity to strengthen their positions in the ongoing 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle.
For Sri Lanka, the match represents a demanding home challenge against one of the strongest Test sides in world cricket. Dhananjaya de Silva will lead a 16-member Sri Lankan squad, with Kamindu Mendis named as his deputy. The squad also includes the notable return of experienced wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella, who has been recalled to the Test side after a lengthy absence.
Sri Lanka’s biggest advantage could be the conditions at Galle. The venue has traditionally provided assistance to spin bowlers as the Test progresses, while the coastal conditions and changing nature of the surface can make batting increasingly demanding. The home side will therefore hope its spinners can exploit the conditions and put pressure on India’s powerful batting line-up.
The hosts will also need substantial contributions from their experienced batsmen. Against an Indian attack capable of maintaining pressure for long periods, Sri Lanka’s top order must show patience and discipline. The first innings could prove particularly important, with a strong batting performance potentially allowing Sri Lanka to control the tempo of the match.
India, meanwhile, arrive with a new leadership era at the centre of attention. Shubman Gill will captain the Test side, while KL Rahul serves as vice-captain. India possess considerable batting depth, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant and the experienced Rahul. Sarfaraz Khan has also returned to the squad after Sai Sudharsan was ruled out with injury.
However, India will not be at full strength. Their premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the series, removing one of their most potent weapons. Washington Sundar is also unavailable for the first Test.
That could make India’s spin combination especially important in Galle. Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav are among the options available, while India’s squad also contains Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain. India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has indicated that the Galle surface is likely to offer opportunities for spin, although conditions could also provide assistance to pace from one end.
The battle between Sri Lanka’s batsmen and India’s spinners could consequently become the defining contest of the Test. If Sri Lanka can negotiate the Indian attack and establish sizeable first-innings totals, the home side will have a genuine opportunity to put India under pressure.
But India possess the experience, depth and confidence to make the hosts work for every run and wicket.
With five days of Test cricket ahead, the Galle International Cricket Stadium is set to provide the stage for a contest in which patience, discipline and the ability to adapt to changing conditions could ultimately decide the outcome.
For Sri Lanka, the challenge is clear: make home advantage count, withstand India’s quality and begin their World Test Championship campaign with a statement victory.
