Sri Lankan netball players undergo emergency medical examination

In an investigation conducted by the National Sports Council to resolve the crisis that has arisen in the selection of the Sri Lankan team for the 14th Asian Netball Championship to be held in Hong Kong, it has been ordered that all the players be sent for an urgent medical examination.

A conflict of opinion arose between the coach and the chairperson of the selection committee regarding a player selected by the netball selection committee for the Asian Championship, and two groups of players had submitted complaints to the Ministry of Sports.

Accordingly, an investigation was held under the chairmanship of the National Sports Council Chairman Priyantha Ekanayake, and a group including Netball Chairman Vajira Netthikumara, National Netball Selection Committee Chairman Padma Beddawala and Netball Coach Somita de Alwis were summoned.

All parties have been asked to cooperate and the Netball Selection Committee has been asked to observe the two upcoming training matches and provide recommendations on the players. In addition, all players have been asked to undergo an urgent medical examination by the Sports Medicine Institute.

When asked about this, Dr. Lal Ekanayake, Director of the Sports Medicine Unit, said that the Netball Federation is ready to conduct a medical examination of the players as soon as a written notification is given.

“We only see if any player is fit for the game. We recommend those who can play well,” said Mr. Ekanayake.
