Boston, USA – France booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals with a commanding 2-0 victory over Morocco in the tournament’s opening quarter-final, ending the Atlas Lions’ impressive campaign with a performance that highlighted the quality and experience of Didier Deschamps’ side.

After a tightly contested opening hour, France’s world-class attacking talent finally broke Morocco’s resistance. Kylian Mbappé once again proved why he remains one of the tournament’s standout performers, producing a moment of brilliance to open the scoring before creating the second goal for Ousmane Dembélé to seal France’s progression.

Morocco entered the quarter-final full of confidence after eliminating Canada with an impressive 3-0 victory in the Round of 16. Walid Regragui’s men had also overcome the Netherlands earlier in the tournament and carried the hopes of African football into Boston. Their disciplined defensive structure frustrated France during the opening stages, while goalkeeper Yassine Bounou delivered another outstanding performance with several crucial saves, including denying Mbappé from the penalty spot early in the match.

Despite Morocco’s resilience, France gradually took control through superior possession, relentless pressing and intelligent movement in the final third. The breakthrough finally arrived when Mbappé collected possession and produced a sensational solo effort, curling a powerful strike beyond Bounou to hand Les Bleus a deserved lead.

Only minutes later, France doubled their advantage. Mbappé turned provider, delivering a perfectly weighted pass that allowed Ousmane Dembélé to finish confidently, effectively ending Morocco’s hopes of another famous World Cup upset.

France’s defensive unit, marshalled by Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba, remained composed throughout the contest, giving Morocco few clear opportunities despite late attempts to increase attacking pressure. Goalkeeper Mike Maignan was rarely called into serious action as the French backline comfortably protected their clean sheet.

The victory continues France’s remarkable run in the tournament. Having comfortably defeated Sweden in the Round of 32 before edging Paraguay 1-0 in the Round of 16 through another Mbappé strike, the two-time world champions now stand just two victories away from lifting another FIFA World Cup trophy. Mbappé’s outstanding tournament form has strengthened his position among the leading contenders for the Golden Boot, while the attacking partnership of Dembélé, Bradley Barcola and the supporting midfield continues to make France one of the competition’s most complete teams.

Although Morocco’s World Cup journey comes to an end, the Atlas Lions once again demonstrated why they remain one of international football’s rising powers. Consecutive appearances in the World Cup quarter-finals underline the remarkable progress of Moroccan football and further establish the nation among the elite on the global stage.

France now advance to the semi-finals, where they will face the winner of the Spain versus Belgium quarter-final. With confidence growing and their star players hitting peak form, Les Bleus appear firmly on course for another memorable World Cup campaign.
