Boston, The first quarter-final of the FIFA World Cup 2026 promises to be a thrilling encounter as France and Morocco lock horns for a coveted place in the semi-finals. The match, scheduled for July 9 at Boston Stadium, rekindles memories of their memorable 2022 World Cup semi-final, adding another chapter to an increasingly compelling football rivalry.

France enter the contest as one of the tournament favourites after impressive victories over Sweden (3-0) and Paraguay (1-0) in the knockout rounds. Didier Deschamps’ side has combined defensive discipline with attacking brilliance, spearheaded by Kylian Mbappé, who has been one of the standout performers of the tournament. France’s wealth of experience and depth make them a formidable opponent at this stage.

Morocco, meanwhile, continue to inspire with another remarkable World Cup campaign. After eliminating Canada 3-0 in the Round of 16, the Atlas Lions have once again demonstrated their resilience, tactical organisation and fighting spirit. Led by Achraf Hakimi and a disciplined defensive unit, Morocco will be eager to create history by reaching another World Cup semi-final.

The midfield battle is expected to play a decisive role, while Morocco’s compact defence will be tested by France’s pace and creativity in the final third. If the African champions can frustrate France early and capitalize on counter-attacks, they could pose a genuine threat.

Although France start as slight favourites due to their experience and attacking quality, Morocco have already shown throughout the tournament that they thrive as underdogs. With a place in the last four at stake, football fans can expect an intense, tactical and emotionally charged contest that could be decided by the finest of margins.

France will once again look to Kylian Mbappé to inspire their attack. The captain has been in outstanding form throughout the tournament, using his blistering pace, intelligent movement and clinical finishing to trouble every defence he has faced. Creative stars Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembélé are expected to provide width and attacking flair, while the experience of Aurélien Tchouaméni in midfield and the safe hands of goalkeeper Mike Maignan will be crucial in maintaining France’s balance.

Morocco, meanwhile, will rely heavily on captain Achraf Hakimi, whose pace and attacking runs from right-back make him one of the most dangerous defenders in world football. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou (Bono) will once again be the last line of defence after several match-winning performances, while Sofyan Amrabat is expected to dictate the tempo in midfield with his tireless work rate. Up front, Youssef En-Nesyri remains Morocco’s biggest goal threat, and Noussair Mazraoui will also play a key role in containing France’s dangerous attacking players
