Bittersweet Ending For Sri Lanka Women’s Cricket

Sri Lanka Women’s Cricket team do not qualify for the 2022 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand as the qualifiers in Zimbabwe have been abandoned due to the COVID situation. The new variant in the African region has been proven more deadly than other variants. Major concerns have risen in many countries because of this new variant.

Sri Lanka’s ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier matches against the West Indies and Ireland were cancelled. The team were under severe threat as up to to 6 Cricketers have been tested positive for Covid-19. Ireland Women also abandoned the match due to travel restrictions back home.

It is unfortunate as the team has not played international cricket for 631 days and were ranked 10th place. Sri Lanka women fail to progress as their rank was not enough to qualify. Thailand Women managed to qualify by winning their games despite being a lower rank. Sri Lanka only played 1 match against Netherlands which they won by 32 runs (D/L). The practice match against USA was a 200 run mammoth win.

It is uncertain as to how many current players will remain until the next World Cup. Chamari Atapattu, the 31 year old captain, was in fine form but invain that this situation has happened to Sri Lanka Women’s Cricket after playing well since the restart of Women’s cricket. The country can only hope a speedy recovery to the team and a safe journey back home.
