Sri Lanka Cricket's proposed new constitution will be finalized this month and the necessary steps will be taken to submit it to Parliament as soon as possible, says Cricket Transformation Committee Chairman Eran Wickramaratne. He added that steps will be taken to refer the draft to the Legal Drafting Department and the Attorney General's Department before submitting it to Parliament.
He said this at a media briefing held at the Sri Lanka Cricket Institute yesterday with the participation of Cricket Transformation Committee representatives.
Secretary Prakash Shafter emphasized that the ICC letter did not provide a time frame for holding an election, and no letter has been received in that regard.
"We have not received any letter. We deny such reports. We have explained what happened in the discussions through a press release," said Mr. Shafter. He said that the discussions between ICC Chairman Jay Shah, who arrived in Colombo last week, and the translation committee were successful. He said that the new constitution is at an advanced stage and has been prepared after studying the governance models used by the ICC and leading cricket boards, including England, Australia and South Africa.
Our committee explained our proposed path forward to the ICC, and that discussion was very successful. We have been in office for only a short time—seven weeks—yet we have been tasked with changing the current system. We have gathered proposals from cricket clubs and affiliated associations regarding how the constitution should be amended, and we have submitted these to Mr. David Becker, a former legal advisor to the ICC, to obtain an international perspective.
"It will now be finalized this month and taken to Parliament. There is a procedure in Parliament. Once passed, the new cricket constitution will come into effect," said Iran Wickramaratne.
The proposed constitution will introduce key governance reforms including independent directors, mandatory female representation and stronger accountability measures, revealed the Cricket Transformation Committee members. The event was also attended by Sri Lanka Cricket Transformation Committee Treasurer, President's Counsel Dinal Phillips and Cricket Committee Chairman Sidath Wettamuny.
