Sri Lanka produced another outstanding performance at the Asian Netball Championship 2026, recording their third consecutive victory with a convincing 78-33 win over the Maldives, further strengthening their position in the tournament and keeping their hopes of challenging for the Asian crown firmly alive.
The Sri Lankan side controlled the match from the opening whistle and demonstrated their growing confidence after recovering from a difficult start to their campaign. Their combination of attacking accuracy, disciplined defence, quick ball movement and excellent teamwork proved too much for the Maldives, who struggled to match Sri Lanka throughout the four quarters.
Sri Lanka made their intentions clear from the first quarter, establishing a 19-9 lead. The Sri Lankan defence applied consistent pressure on the Maldivian attack, while the shooters converted their opportunities with impressive efficiency.
The second quarter proved decisive. Sri Lanka produced their most productive attacking spell of the match, scoring 26 goals, while restricting the Maldives to just 11. That 26-11 quarter gave Sri Lanka a commanding 45-20 advantage at halftime and placed them firmly in control of the contest.
There was no let-up after the interval. Sri Lanka continued to dominate the third quarter, scoring 16 goals while allowing the Maldives only three. The defensive unit was particularly impressive during this period, frustrating the Maldivian attack and limiting their scoring opportunities. Sri Lanka entered the final quarter with a massive 61-23 lead.
The fourth quarter followed the same pattern. Sri Lanka added another 17 goals, while the Maldives scored 10, enabling the Sri Lankans to complete a comprehensive 78-33 victory.
A remarkable recovery
The latest victory is particularly significant considering the difficult moments Sri Lanka experienced earlier in the championship.
Sri Lanka opened their campaign against Singapore, suffering a 67-51 defeat. Singapore established control during the match and handed Sri Lanka their first setback of the tournament.
The Sri Lankans then faced the host nation Hong Kong in a closely fought encounter. Neither side was able to establish a decisive advantage, with the match eventually ending in a 57-57 draw.
Rather than allowing those results to affect their confidence, Sri Lanka responded strongly and began producing the type of performances expected from a team with ambitions of reclaiming the Asian title.
Their turnaround started with a 66-53 victory over Malaysia. Sri Lanka displayed greater control in attack and maintained enough defensive discipline to secure a 13-goal victory against the Malaysians.
That was followed by perhaps their most impressive performance of the tournament so far — a spectacular 100-34 victory over India.
Sri Lanka completely dominated the Indian side in that encounter, producing a remarkable 66-goal winning margin. The Sri Lankan attack was virtually unstoppable, while their defence restricted India to just 34 goals. Reaching the 100-goal mark also underlined the team’s attacking strength and confidence.
Sri Lanka then maintained that momentum against the Maldives, completing a run of three successive victories.

The sequence demonstrates a remarkable turnaround. From losing their opening match to Singapore and then being held by Hong Kong, Sri Lanka have responded with three consecutive victories, scoring 244 goals across those three matches while conceding only 120.
Their attacking improvement has been particularly impressive. The 100-goal performance against India remains the standout result, while the 78 goals against the Maldives showed that Sri Lanka’s scoring consistency has been maintained.
At the other end of the court, their defensive performances have also improved significantly. After conceding 67 goals against Singapore and 57 against Hong Kong, Sri Lanka conceded only 53 against Malaysia, 34 against India and 33 against the Maldives.
This improvement in defence has played a major role in their winning streak.
Building momentum at the right time
The latest victory over the Maldives therefore represents more than just another win. It is evidence that Sri Lanka are building momentum at a crucial stage of the Asian Netball Championship.
The team now appears to have found greater balance between attack and defence. The shooters have shown excellent accuracy, while the midcourt has provided effective ball supply and the defenders have become increasingly difficult for opponents to break down.
The Sri Lankan players will now be hoping to carry this momentum forward as the championship enters its decisive stages.
After an opening defeat and a draw, Sri Lanka have responded in emphatic fashion. Three consecutive victories — against Malaysia, India and Maldives — have placed the team firmly back among the leading contenders.
The road ahead will still demand consistency and concentration, but the manner in which Sri Lanka have recovered suggests that they remain determined to challenge for the Asian Netball Championship title.
