Australia close in on semi-finals after Ellyse Perry’s fifty powers win over Pakistan

The Australian cricket team continued its unbeaten run in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a 113-run win over Pakistan in its penultimate Group 1 match against Pakistan at the Headingley, Leeds, on Tuesday.

Ellyse Perry starred with the bat, scoring 71 off 48 balls to help power Australia to a total off 199/7. Kim Garth (2/22), Sophie Molineux (2/6) and Perry (2/9) took two wickets each for the six-time Women’s T20 World Cup winners.

The victory consolidated Australia’s hold on top spot in Group 1, taking them closer to the semi-finals with eight points with four wins in as many matches and a Net Run Rate of 4.304.

Chasing 200 to win, Pakistan’s innings never really took away as they lost three wickets inside the powerplay.

Gull Feroza and Ayesha Zafar were both run out, while Saira Jabeen’s stay ended when she mistimed a slog sweep off Sophie Molineux and was caught by Ashleigh Gardner at deep midwicket.

WIckets continued to fall at regular intervals for Pakistan with their top-scorer Muneeba Ali (32 off 25) departing in the 10th over, leaving them on 65/5.

Pakistan went on to add just 21 more runs for their final five wickets as Australia registered a resounding win to edge nearer to the semi-finals.

Earlier, after opting to bat, Australia suffered an immediate setback when opener Beth Mooney fell off the first ball of the innings to Sadia Iqbal.

The early wicket did little to derail the Australians as Georgia Voll and Ellyse Perry stitched together a 100-run stand to seize control of the contest.

Their aggressive approach powered Australia to 64 in the powerplay and brought up the team’s century while Ellyse Perry reached her fifty.

Pakistan finally managed to break the partnership in the 10th over when Nashra Sandhu dismissed Voll.

Australia’s momentum stalled further as Ashleigh Gardner departed for a duck and Georgia Wareham followed within the space of six deliveries, allowing Pakistan to claw their way back into the match.

Perry and Annabel Sutherland then steadied the innings with a 44-run partnership before the latter fell at the start of the 17th over. Perry departed an over later, leaving Australia on 167/6.

Despite losing two set batters in quick succession, Australia finished strongly thanks to Nicola Carey’s unbeaten 26 off 13 balls, pushing the total to the brink of the 200-run mark.

Australia will play their final Group 1 match against India at Lord’s on Sunday.
