Sri Lanka face achievable chase of 151 against New Zealand women

Sri Lanka women have been set a target of 151 runs from 20 overs and will believe the chase is well within reach, although it will require a composed and determined batting performance against a quality New Zealand bowling attack.
After being asked to bat first, New Zealand women struggled to gain momentum in the powerplay, managing just 38 runs while losing an early wicket. The innings was then rebuilt through a crucial partnership between Amelia Kerr and Sophie Devine, who both contributed valuable 45-run knocks. Their efforts steadied the innings and guided the White Ferns towards a competitive total.
However, Sri Lanka’s bowlers maintained excellent discipline throughout the innings, preventing New Zealand from accelerating in the closing stages. Kavisha Dilhari led the attack with two wickets, while the rest of the bowling unit delivered economical spells to restrict the hosts to 150/6 from their 20 overs.
Speaking during the innings break, New Zealand captain Sophie Devine admitted her side was disappointed with the final total, feeling they had fallen around 20 runs short of a par score. She noted that the surface played a little slower than in the previous match and praised Sri Lanka’s bowlers for consistently hitting good areas and attacking the stumps.
The chase now begins under increasingly dark and overcast conditions, with the cloud cover expected to assist the seam bowlers. Sri Lanka’s opening pair of Chamari Athapaththu and Vishmi Gunarathne know the importance of making a strong start and maximizing the powerplay if they are to overhaul the target.
New Zealand have entrusted the new ball to Rosemary Mair, who will look to exploit the helpful conditions and provide an early breakthrough. While 151 is by no means an imposing target, Sri Lanka cannot afford a slow start or a cluster of wickets against an experienced White Ferns bowling unit.
