Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga, the world’s number one javelin thrower, departed the country the day before yesterday to compete in four international tournaments.
Kicking off this tour, Rumesh is scheduled to compete in the Lausanne Diamond League meet in Switzerland tomorrow (21); Germany’s Julian Weber—who lost the top spot in the world rankings to Rumesh—is also set to participate in this event.
It is significant that this event marks the first time the world’s top two athletes in this discipline are facing each other. Along with them, the world’s six leading javelin throwers are also set to compete in the Lausanne tournament.
After returning home and resting for a few days following his gold medal win in the javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland, Rumesh has embarked on this tour, resuming a busy schedule.
In addition to the Lausanne meet, Rumesh is scheduled to compete in three other world-class events during this tour. Following the Lausanne competition, he will participate in the Zurich Diamond League in Switzerland on the 27th of this month, and subsequently compete in the Diamond League Final in Brussels, Belgium, on the 5th of next month.
To conclude the tour, he is scheduled to compete in the World Athletics Final in Hungary on the 13th of next month.
Before departing for the tournaments, Rumesh Tharanga stated that he would be competing in four of the world’s most prestigious tournaments and hoped to bring victory to Sri Lanka.
“There are four major tournaments globally. The world’s top eight athletes—including Julian Weber, who recently achieved a 90-meter mark—will be participating. So, the competition will be fierce. My hope is to bring a victory home to Sri Lanka, just as I have done before,” Rumesh said.
