400m athlete Nishendra suspended

Sri Lankan 400m athlete Nishendra Harshani Fernando, who came first with a personal best at the National Athletics Trials, has been provisionally suspended after being accused of using banned substances.
The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) imposed the temporary ban after a New Delhi laboratory confirmed that three classes of anabolic steroids, which are used to enhance physical performance, were present in her urine sample.
The athlete, who strongly denies all allegations of using banned anabolic steroids in international competition, has decided to request that her ‘B’ urine sample be tested. If the ‘A’ sample is found to contain banned substances, and the athlete requests a ‘B’ sample to be tested without giving any reason, the opportunity should be provided and the athlete should pay for the cost of the second test
Nishendra Harshani contributed to winning the bronze medal representing the 400m medley relay team at the 26th Asian Junior Athletics Championships held in Gumi, South Korea, and was also a member of the women's relay team that won the silver medal at the recent Invitational Relay Championships held in India.

Nishendra Harshani Fernando completed the 400m race in 52.87 seconds, a personal best, at the National Athletics Selection Tournament held in Diyagama. Jithma Wijetunga came second in 53.24 seconds and B.S.L. Mendis came third in 53.49 seconds
