Angelo Mathews announces retirement from Test cricket

Final Test to be against Bangladesh in June

Veteran all-rounder and former captain Angelo Mathews has announced his retirement from international Test cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable 17-year red-ball career for Sri Lanka.

Mathews made the announcement via a heartfelt message, expressing deep gratitude to the game, Sri Lanka Cricket, and the fans who stood by him through all highs and lows. His final Test match will be against Bangladesh in June 2025.

Describing playing for Sri Lanka as his “highest honour and pride,” Mathews said it was time to make way for younger players to take over the mantle. He added that he will remain available for selection in white-ball formats.

Mathews, a mainstay in Sri Lanka’s middle order and one of the most dependable all-rounders of his generation, thanked his family, coaches, management, and fans for their unwavering support throughout his journey.
