Sri Lanka Army commands at Boxing National Awards 2019

Sri Lanka Army men’s boxing team won the 94th  National Boxing Championship 2019 on last Friday at Royal MAS Arena. It was a  fine performance from soldiers to retain the highest award for the pugilists in the country. The unbeaten Army boxing team secured 5 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze medals in this National Boxing championships. MAS Slimline ended with second place at the men boxing tournament.

In addition, the Army Boxing team was titled as Most Successful Boxing Club of the year. The performances of the 2019 year boxing tournaments are considered for this award. Army boxers won Layton cup championships, Clifford Cup Championships before won this National title.

Meanwhile, Army female boxers too secured 3 Bronze medals. MAS Unichela and Air Force won the women’s champions and runner up. The Most Outstanding Boxer of the year award won by  WA.R. Sandakelum of Army who competed at the light heavyweight (81kg weight class). Sandakelum beat HM.P.M Silva of Air Force at the 81kg final. Sandakelum who also won the South Asian Games gold at this same weight class and that was the boxing gold for Sri Lanka after 20 years.

The hundred male boxers and 45 female boxers represented 21 boxing clubs to participate this Nationals and for the first time, foreign boxing referees from AIBA  gave their valuable service to success the National championships.

Meanwhile, Amateur Boxing Association is expected to consider these National performances for the Hungarian International Boxing meet held in next February, Montana Belt Boxing meet in France and Thailand Open Boxing championship held in next April.
