Sri Lanka bagged 1 Silver and 3 Bronze medals at CWG 2022 as the curtain falls today.

Sri Lanka finish their campaign of Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham with 1 Silver and 3 Bronze medals.

During the last Commonwealth Games Sri Lanka recorded one silver and 5 bronze medals.

Sri Lanka’s first medal at the Commonwealth Games was recorded by Promising weightlifter Dilanka Isuru Kumara.Kumara produced a fine performance to secure the bronze medal in the 55kg weight class as he lifted 105kgs in the snatch category and 120kgs in the clean and jerk category to finish in third place with an aggregate total of 225kg.

Sri Lanka’s Yupun Abeykoon won the bronze medal in Men’s 100m, while para-athlete Palitha Bandara secured a silver medal in Men’s F42-44/61-64 Discus Throw, making them the first ever Sri Lankan medal winners in their respective events at the Commonwealth Games.

The third bronze medal for Sri Lanka was won by 18 year old Wrestler Nethmi Ahinsa Fernando as the Sri Lanka’s 4th medal at Commonwealth Games 2022. It was the first time that Sri Lanka received a medal for wrestling at the Commonwealth Games and local history.  She beat former commonwealth runner up Irene Symeonidis of Australia in the Women’s 57KG Bronze medal encounter (10-0).

The most disappointing moment at this year’s games was 2018 Gold Coast silver medalist Indika Dissanayake could not retained his medal. Indika claimed silver medal in Men’s weightlifting 56kg event as the only silver medal recorded at the Gold Coast 2018 for Sri Lanka.

The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka sent a contingent of 165 athletes and officials to the event which held from 28 July to 8 August. Due to the financial constraints and qualifying in sports with qualifying standards to earn the eligibility for participation, the selection was done meticulously through a stringent selection process under the scrutiny of CGA Sri Lanka, Ministry of Sports restricting the total number to 114 male and female athletes.

The previous biggest participation was 103 in Glasgow 2014 while in Gold Coast 2018 it was 79

The country made its Commonwealth Games debut in the discipline of rhythmic gymnastics and Canadian born Anna-Marie Ondaatje became the first gymnast to represent Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth 2018 games.

Sri Lanka recorded 1 silver and five bronze medals in 2018. Weight lifters Chaturagga Lakmal (men’s 56kg) , Dinusha Gomes ( Women’s 48kg) secured two bronze medals. The other three bronze medals were recorded in boxing. Anusha Kodithuwakku (Women’s 48kg), Thiwanka ranasinghe (Men’s 49kg) and Vidanalage Bandara (Men’s 52kg) have won bronze for Sri Lanka
