A 156-member contingent of athletes is set to represent Sri Lanka at the 20th Asian Games, which begin in Japan next week.
The team is scheduled to depart from the country on the 13th of this month.
A media briefing regarding this sports festival was held yesterday at the Ministry of Sports, attended by Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage and National Olympic Committee President Asanga Seneviratne; it was announced that 156 athletes would represent Sri Lanka across 25 sports disciplines at the event.
The squad comprises 100 male and 56 female athletes. Cricket accounts for the largest contingent, with 30 players participating. Significant numbers of athletes are also competing in athletics (24), hockey (18), and rugby sevens (13). Group Captain Eranda Geeganage serves as the team leader for this year’s games and is scheduled to depart for Japan tomorrow to oversee arrangements and logistics for the Sri Lankan team.
The Sri Lankan team will travel to Japan for the sports festival in batches; plans have been made for the first group to depart on the 13th of this month and the final group on the 2nd of next month
