Yupun Abeykoon is a generational talent in Sri Lanka. More than a decade ago, we had Susanthika Jayasinghe taking over the world. Now, we have a sub 10 runner representing the South Asian region.
His performances at the BAUHAUS-galan (Diamond League – Stockholm) and the Resisprint International 100m events last week has pushed him all the way to a career best rank of 24th place from his previous best of 32nd place.
He is also the current 2nd best in Asia and 8th best in Commonwealth countries, His record breaking timing of 9.96 seconds is also a joint 15th fastest in the world for this season.
His next competition will be the World Athletics Championship at Oregon and afterwards, he is set to join the Commonwealth Games past the date of the opening ceremony. He along with Gayanthika Abeyratne (800m) and Nilani Rathnayake (3000m Steeple Chase) are also to compete.
It should also be noted that long jumper Sarangi Silva has also qualified last minute after a rank upgrade. She was unfortunately placed 34th and now is among the Top 32. However, it is learnt that she will not participate and will proceed for training in Turkey to focus on the Commonwealth Games.
