Sri Lankan Athletes win 3 medals in the Weekend

The weekend has been great for Sri Lankan sports, not only for winning the last match in the T20I series against Australia but also in Athletics as 3 medals were won over the weekend.
The first medal was won by Lakshini Sarangi Silva who won the 1st place in the Women’s Long Jump at the ATLETICAGENEVE 2022 held in Geneva, Switzerland. This was a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze Level meet. She was the only Sri Lankan at the event who finished on the podium, with a Gold medal, for her best jump of 6.33m (+2.4 m/s wind).
Fellow athlete Sumedha Ranasinghe fell short in Javelin as he only managed 70.21m and came 4th place. Kalinga Kumarage and Gayanthika Abeyratne finished 6th and 9th respectively in the 400m and 800m events.
The same day in a later time, USA based Sri Lankan Long Jumper Dhanushka Sandaruwan jumped a personal best distance of 8.03m (+1.8m/s wind) and won 1st place in the Max Velocity Athletics High Performance Meet 2022, held in California.
The 61st National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championship held in India is still underway and yesterday, the Sri Lanka Women’s 4x100m team came 2nd place, clocking 45.35s. The Silver medal winning team consisted of Medhani Jayamanna, Lakshika Sugandi, Amasha De Silva and Shelinda Jansen.
The Men’s and Mixed relays which Sri Lanka is participating are yet to commence and will finish tomorrow. Amasha the other day, missed the podium as she finished in 4th place for 100m and Aruna Dharshana finished in 5th place in 400m.
Hopefully, the Sri Lanka athletes can repeat their success today and tomorrow as additionally, the competitors in Switzerland will participate in the Citius Meeting held in Bern.
