Julius of Uganda won the men’s event at the ‘Colombo Marathon’ organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, while Kasahun Teferi of Ethiopia secured victory in the women’s event. Both athletes claimed the Colombo Marathon championship title and a cash prize of 1.7 million rupees each. The top five finishers in the women’s full marathon were all from Ethiopia and Kenya, while the top five positions in the men’s full marathon were shared among athletes from Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia.
Athletes from Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia secured the top honors in the full marathon (42.195 km) and half marathon (21.097 km) races, which began yesterday at 6:00 a.m. near the National Sports Authority premises, proceeded via Kollupitiya and Marine Drive towards Galle Face and Dehiwala, and concluded near the Ministry of Sports.
The event featured a 10km road race and a 5km fun run. Over 5,000 athletes—including 130 foreign competitors representing 25 countries—participated in the Colombo Marathon, and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had arranged for prize money exceeding Rs. 12.8 million to be awarded to the winners.
