SL v AFG, 1st T20I – Pathirana’s late magic with the ball seals a dramatic win for Sri Lanka

What a thrilling contest! Sri Lanka celebrates a commanding 4-run triumph over Afghanistan in the RDICS at Dambulla.

Earlier, Afghanistan won the toss and elected to field first. Sri Lanka’s opening four wickets were dismissed at regular intervals. However, Sri Lanka’s skipper, Wanindu Hasaranga, took responsibility and built a quick 72-run partnership with Sadeera Samarawickrama. Wanindu scored 67 runs off 32 balls before being dismissed by Fazalhaq Farooqi. After that, Afghanistan’s bowlers restricted Sri Lanka’s innings to 160 runs in 19 overs. For Afghanistan, Fazalhaq Farooqi (3), Naveen-ul-Haq (2), Azmatullah Omarzai (2), Noor Ahmad (1), and Karim Janat (1) took wickets.

In reply, Afghan skipper Fazalhaq Farooqi(67*) showed his brilliance once again as he tried to get Afghanistan on the winning track until the last moment. But the magical spells of Sri Lankan youngster Matheesha Pathirana took four important wickets in the last overs. Eventually, Afghanistan only managed to score 156/9 in 20 overs.  Dasun Shanaka(2), Angelo Mathews(1), Maheesh Theekshana(1), and Wanindu Hasaranga(1) took wickets for Sri Lanka.
