Army Boxers clinch Clifford Cup

The Sri Lanka Army Men’s Boxing Team and the Sri Lanka Air Force Women’s Boxing Team emerged as the champions in their respective categories in an exciting showdown at the annual Clifford Cup Boxing Championship and Dian Gomes Challenge Trophy held at the Royal College MAS Arena.

The Sri Lanka Army boxers displayed a dominant show, securing a total of a dozen medals, including nine gold, two silver, and one bronze. This outstanding performance led them to clinch the Clifford Cup.

HMLP Jayawardana, the 2020 National Winner and 2023 Layton Cup Winner, claimed the Men’s Best Boxer title in the 48kg category.

On the women’s side, the Sri Lanka Air Force Women’s Boxing Team shone brightly, winning the Dian Gomes Challenge Trophy with a total of seven medals – five gold and two bronze. KTI Perera of the Sri Lanka Air Force was named the Women’s Best Boxer in the 57kg category.

Individual recognitions were also awarded, with KMGKGI Ariyaratne of the Sri Lanka Navy earning the Men’s Best Loser title in the 75kg weight class, and Pubudi Vidanagamage, competing in the 52kg weight category, named the Women’s Best Loser.

The Sri Lanka Navy Men’s Boxing Team secured the runner-up position in the men’s category with a total of nine medals – one gold, four silver, and four bronze. The Sri Lanka Air Force Men’s Boxing Team claimed the third spot, earning five medals – one gold, one silver, and three bronze.

In the women’s division for the Dian Gomes Challenge Trophy, the Sri Lanka Air Force Women’s Boxing Team dominated, while the runner-up Sri Lanka Army Women’s Boxing Team secured four gold and two silver medals. The third-place Sri Lanka Navy Women’s Team earned one medal in each of the three categories.

The five-day event witnessed participation of 144 boxers from 22 clubs, showing their skills in the ring.
