Modern Pentathlon gets nod to National Sports Festival

The Ministry of Sports has decided to add modern pentathlon to the National Sports Festival. This is the first time that this sport is included in the National Games and it has been named an optional sport.

The Deputy of Director Sports, I P Wijerathna  said that the participation of sportsmen and sportswomen from all provinces cannot be expected since the modern pentathlon sport will be included in the first stage.

“This year, the modern pentathlon will not be included in the medal list of the National Sports Festival,” said Nishanthe Piyasena , President of the Modern pentathlon Federation of Sri Lanka.

“ It is a great achievement for the sport to reach this milestone  in the short span of time “ Piyasena added.

Nishanthe Piyasena was re-elected president of the Modern Pentathlon Federation of Sri Lanka (MPFSL) at their annual general meeting (AGM) held on December 22 at the Ceylon City Hotel in Mt. Lavinia.

Prabod Dharshana Munasinghe was elected as the general secretary while Ushan Kodagoda was elected as the treasurer. Eight members were elected as office bearers and they will serve the MPFSL for a term of two years until 2022.

The modern pentathlon is an Olympic sport that comprises five different events; fencing (one-touch épée), freestyle swimming (200 m), equestrian show jumping (15 jumps), and a final combined event of pistol shooting and cross country running (3200 m)
