The Sri Lankan men’s and women’s squads have been named for the T20 cricket events at the 20th Asian Games taking place in Japan.
Each squad comprises 15 players; the Sri Lanka ‘A’ men’s team will compete under the captaincy of Sahan Arachchige, while the national women’s team will be led by Chamari Athapaththu.
The women’s cricket event at this sports festival, featuring eight teams, begins on the 17th with the quarter-final round. Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Thailand, Malaysia, and the host nation, Japan, are participating in the tournament; the Sri Lankan team is set to play against Malaysia in the third quarter-final match on the 18th. The semi-finals are scheduled for the 20th, while the final and the match for third place are due to take place on the 22nd.
Alongside Sri Lanka—one of the key teams in the men’s tournament—’A’ teams from Afghanistan and Pakistan are participating, while India and Bangladesh have fielded their national teams.
Matches in the preliminary round of the men’s tournament begin on the 24th of this month, featuring Afghanistan, Japan, Nepal, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Oman. Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh will join the competition at the quarter-final stage, with those matches scheduled for the 28th and 29th. The semi-finals will be held on October 1st, and the final match on the 3rd.
