Qatar Earn Historic First World Cup Point in Dramatic Draw with Switzerland

Santa Clara, California, June 13 – Qatar produced one of the most memorable moments of their football history by securing a dramatic 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their opening Group B match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. A stoppage-time equalizer earned the Gulf nation its first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup.

Switzerland, widely considered favorites before kick-off, dominated proceedings from the opening whistle and took the lead in the 17th minute. Striker Breel Embolo calmly converted a penalty after Qatari goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada brought down Swiss midfielder Remo Freuler inside the penalty area.

The Swiss controlled possession for long periods and created numerous scoring opportunities, registering 26 attempts on goal compared to Qatar’s seven. However, a combination of determined defending and wasteful finishing prevented Switzerland from extending their advantage.

As the match entered stoppage time, Qatar launched one final attack. A cross from Homam Ahmed found captain Boualem Khoukhi, whose powerful header took a deflection before finding the net, sparking wild celebrations among players and supporters alike. The goal, officially recorded as a late equalizer, secured a priceless point for the Asian side.

The result leaves Group B finely balanced after the opening round of matches, with Qatar, Switzerland, Canada and Bosnia & Herzegovina all level on one point.

Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui praised his team’s resilience and fighting spirit, while Swiss coach Murat Yakin expressed disappointment over his side’s inability to convert dominance into victory.

Qatar will next face co-hosts Canada, while Switzerland take on Bosnia & Herzegovina in crucial Group B encounters that could determine qualification for the knockout stage.
