Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapattu’s 70 ball 111 helps Sri Lanka Women beat the Netherlands by 34 runs (D/L Method) in their first World Cup Qualifier game.
Chamari scored her century in 64 balls and was dismissed at 111. She hit 5 sixes and 11 fours in her 70 ball stay at the crease. Anushka Sanjeewani scored 31 runs while batting in the middle order. Caroline de Lange picked 4 wickets for Netherlands. Sri Lanka finished with 278 runs on the scoreboard for the loss of 9 wickets.
The Dutch women were off to a good start but the run rate got too much at one point and after rain interrupted play, required 231 runs to win (D/L par score). However the Sri Lankan team held their nerve and bowled with discipline. Netherlands managed just 196 runs for 6 in 43.4 overs.
Sri Lanka will need to come in the top 3 places to secure their place into the 2022 ICC Women’s World Cup. Chamari Atapattu being the first centurion in the Qualifiers will be expected to lead the way for the Sri Lankan women’s team.
