Nine affiliated athletics associations have submitted a motion against the conduct of the Athletics Association to the Ministry of Sports. A copy of this motion has been forwarded to the President of the Athletics Association, and the associations have requested that a Special General Meeting be convened to make appropriate decisions.
The athletics associations that have submitted these requests are the Kegalle District Athletics Association, Kurunegala District Association, Puttalam District Association, Sri Lak Sports Club, Track Master Sports Club, Lanka Lions Sports Club, Sri Lanka Schools Athletics Association, CT & FC, and Kalutara Athletics Association.
The letter points out that the Sri Lanka Athletics Association was elected in violation of sports regulations and rules, and expresses strong dissatisfaction with the manner in which the executive committee has functioned over the past three months.
Coaches have highlighted that actions taken have been unfair to several talented young athletes, noting that this has impacted the future of the sport.
Depriving the Sri Lankan men’s 4x400m relay team—which had ranked among the world’s top 24 teams this year—of the opportunity to participate in the World Relays Championships held in China; failing to submit the budget estimate for the National Junior Athletics Championships held at the Diyagama Stadium to the Athletics Executive Committee for approval, the inconvenience caused to athletes by officials of the current athletics body who informed them that they must personally bear the visa costs for international tours, and the failure to appoint a new secretary—in accordance with the Sports Act and the athletics constitution—despite several months having passed since Mr. Madhava Bandara Senarath resigned from the position.
About six months ago, Mr. Bimal Prasanna Wijesinghe was elected President of the Sri Lanka Athletics Association by a margin of 23 votes, while Mr. Madhava Bandara Senarath was elected Secretary.
