The 6th edition of the Lanka Premier League got off to an exciting start as defending champions Jaffna Kings faced Galle Gallants at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Ground in Colombo.
After winning the toss, Jaffna Kings captain Bhanuka Rajapaksa chose to bowl first.
Galle Gallants made a solid start with openers Sam Harper and Lasith Croospulle. Dunith Wellalage then made history by taking the first wicket of the tournament, dismissing Croospulle in the 3.2nd over.
After the early wicket, Charith Asalanka took control of the innings with a brilliant 65-run knock. In the final overs, skipper Dasun Shanaka played some powerful shots took Galle Gallants innings to 213/6.
Chasing the target, Jaffna Kings struggled to score runs in the first 10 overs. However, Chamindu Wickramasinghe and Dunith Wellalage tried to change the momentum, but the Galle Gallants bowlers kept taking wickets at the right time.
Jaffna Kings were all out for 177 in 19.4 overs, giving Galle Gallants a comfortable win by 36 runs. Eshan Malinga was the best bowler for the Gallants, taking 4 wickets.
