Sri Lankan modern pentathlon team to head to World Championship in Egypt

The Sri Lankan modern pentathlon team left for Egypt yesterday to participate in the World Pentathlon Championship. Athletes from 128 countries will participate in the tournament, which will be held in Cairo, Egypt from tomorrow to the 12th.
Marking a new chapter in Sri Lankan sports history, a national modern pentathlon team has qualified for the world championships for the first time, with Isiwaruna de Silva, Sachini Ratnathilaka and Gayani Dassanayake, along with team official Iroshan Sampath Kumara, joining the tournament.
In this competition, each athlete must perform 5 sports, and medals are awarded based on the scores they receive. This modern pentathlon includes fencing, steeplechase, swimming, shooting, and running events.
The participation of Sri Lankan athletes in this tournament is a special opportunity for the Sri Lanka Modern Pentathlon Federation, said its Chairman Nishantha Piyasena. “This is a proud and crucial moment for the modern pentathlon sport. We are delighted that the sport, which started with very limited resources, has reached the world level today
"As a new sport that started in Sri Lanka, we were able to elevate it to the top within 8 years. The participation of our athletes in this World Cup tournament will not only elevate the name of Sri Lanka globally but also pave the way for the future Olympics," said  Nishantha Piyasena.
