ICC suspension triggers Sri Lanka sports law reforms

Sri Lanka would soon come up with a new sports law that aims to eliminate political interference in the administration of the governing body, SLC.

A cabinet sub committee appointed by President Ranil Wickremesinghe in November last year has reported back to him last Monday with the necessary recommendations.

The committee came to be appointed after the then sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe’s action to appoint an interim committee to run SLC in a blatant violation of the ICC’s governance rules for member country administrations.

The ICC promptly suspended Sri Lanka and the suspension is still on going which also caused the shifting of hosting the under 19 world cup this month to South Africa.

Wickremesinghe sacked Ranasinghe and his successor Harin Fernando later overturned the interim committee appointment leaving the elected administration of Shammi Silva intact.

During the crisis Wickremesinghe said he would draft a new sports law which would replace the 1973 law that had given powers to the sports minister to appoint interim committees.

The foreign minister Ali Sabry headed cabinet committee said they had reviewed the current composition and structure of SLC to propose reforms.

The SLC with its prominence acquired after the 1996 world cup win as the island’s richest body had seen many scramble for high positions. This has resulted in several interim committees being appointed politically and in some instances even violent elections for office.

The current voting structure for office bearers is being accused as one which facilitated vote buying. (PTI)
