Muay Thai National Championship returns after hiatus

In a triumphant comeback, the Muay Thai National Championship is set to electrify the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from November 30 to December 3. After a hiatus enforced by the global pandemic, the much-anticipated event will see 600 skilled athletes from 30 clubs across the country vying for glory.

Originally inaugurated in 2017, the championship has become a cornerstone of the nation’s sports

calendar, showcasing the prowess of Muay Thai practitioners. The last edition, held in January 2020, marked a momentous occasion before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted sporting events worldwide.

Preceding the championship, a Muay Thai referee and judge course was conducted on November 26, following a two-day workshop.

The comprehensive training was complemented by a meeting with coaches and managers from Muay Thai clubs, emphasising the commitment to fair play and sportsmanship.

Highlighting the significance of Muay Thai in Sri Lanka, the sport has earned recognition as the 63rd National Sport under the Sports Ministry and is governed under the Sri Lanka Muay Thai Federation. This official status underscores the growing popularity and institutional support for Muay Thai within the country.

As the nation eagerly awaits the thrilling bouts and fierce competition, the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium prepares to witness the skill, determination, and sportsmanship that define the Muay Thai National Championship. Brace yourselves for a captivating display of martial arts excellence as Sri Lanka’s best fighters converge for this prestigious event.
