Sri Lankan Chess Olympiad first ever Gold medalist Suneetha Wijesuriya obtained the title of “FIDE Trainer “from the International Chess Federation recently and this is the first time Sri Lankan chess player has obtained the FIDE Trainer title.
World Chess Federation President Arkady Dvorkovich recognized Sri Lankan ten time women’s National chess champion presented the certificate to Suneetha as FIDE Trainer .Suneetha who is the person behind the success of Anatoly Karpov Chess Club doing excellent job to promote this sport in Sri Lanka all over the country got honour this title as her effort of chess instructor highly appreciated by the world chess Federation.
Suneetha won first ever gold medal at Chess Olympiad in Manila in 1992 while she used to play chess from her school from the age 0f 17 at the Sri Rajasinghe Central College in Kolonnawa while she claimed her first National title in 1980 and also continued her dominance winning National titles from 1982 to 1988. Suneetha’s first ever Chess Olympiad gold medal became only second major sporting achievement for Sri Lanka at world level after Mohamed Lafir’s world title triumph in the 1973 world Amateur Billiards championship.
Suneetha started Anatoly Karpov Chess Club in Russian Centre in 1998 and upto date she is giving much needed support to young chess players. Suneetha hails from a Chess family Her sister Vineetha also former National champion based in Melbourne and her brother Lukshman Wijesuriya is also a former National champion presently President of National Chess Federation as well as Vice President of Asian Chess Federation.
