Nadila and Amaya bag top honours at Gymnastic Nationals

The Kugumiya Munahiru Gymnastic Club made a triumphant return to the national gymnastics stage as Nadila Nethviru and Amaya Kalukottage secured their debut National Championships in the Men’s and Women’s categories, respectively. The 28th National Gymnastic Championships, organized by the National Gymnastic Association, concluded on Sunday at Torrington Gymnasium after a three-year hiatus.

Nadila Nethviru, who had previously participated in the national championships in 2018 and 2019, marked a remarkable comeback. In 2018, he narrowly missed the finals, but in 2019, he emerged as the runner-up. After a three-year gap due to the absence of the championship, Nadila clinched his debut National Championships this year.

Nethviru’s stellar performance shone through as he claimed the championship title in all six categories, including his specialty, the Pommel Horse, which he will represent at the upcoming Asian Games. He also secured top honours in High Bars, Floor Exercises, Parallel Bars, Vaulting Tables, and Roman Rings.

“I am really happy to win the National Championships,” expressed Nethviru, the sole representative for the forthcoming Asian Games later this month. Amaya Kalukottage, another rising star from the Kugumiya Munahiru Gymnastic Club, emulated Nethviru’s success by clinching her debut National Championship. Kalukottage initiated her national championship journey in 2016, and after three-time runner-up finishes, she emerged as the National Champion this year.

Kalukottage’s excellence was particularly evident in Vaulting Tables. Additionally, Niyara Fernando of the Kugumiya Munahiru Gymnastic Club secured the championship in the Uneven Bars and Floor Exercises categories, while Luhara Gayathmi of the Galle District Gymnastic Club became the Balance Beam champion. “I am really happy to achieve this milestone while balancing my studies,” shared Amaya Kalukottage, a third-year student at Sri Jayewardenepura University.

In a spectacular display of talent and determination, the Kugumiya Munahiru Gymnastic Club secured both the Men’s and Women’s Overall Championships. The Men’s Overall Runners-up Trophy was claimed by the Sri Lanka Army, while the third-place spot went to the Friendship Gymnastic Club.

For the Women’s division, the Overall Runners-up Trophy was won by the Galle District Gymnastic Club and the Cambrian Gymnastic Club secured the third position.
