Sri Lanka’s sporting community has been plunged into grief following the tragic death of para-shooter Niranjala Ranasinghe, who passed away on October 5, 2026, following a sudden accident.
The National Paralympic Committee of Sri Lanka expressed profound sadness over her untimely death, paying tribute to an athlete whose dedication, courage and commitment to representing her country will always be remembered.
Ranasinghe was preparing to represent Sri Lanka at the fifth Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, scheduled to be held from October 18 to 24. She was named as the sole representative of Sri Lanka in para-shooting for the continental competition, where she was set to compete in the 10m air rifle events.
Her selection for the Games marked a significant milestone in her sporting career, reflecting her determination to compete at the highest level of international para-shooting.
Ranasinghe had gained valuable international exposure through participation in major qualifying competitions, including the World Shooting Para Sport World Cup in New Delhi, India, and the Para Shooting World Championships in South Korea and Jordan. These international appearances provided her with opportunities to compete against experienced shooters and develop her skills on the global stage.
In the 10m air rifle discipline, para-athletes require exceptional concentration, precision, consistency and composure under pressure. Ranasinghe’s participation in international competitions demonstrated her commitment to pursuing excellence and earning the opportunity to represent Sri Lanka at major sporting events.
Her Asian Para Games campaign was expected to be another important chapter in her sporting journey. She was due to compete in the R2 Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing and R3 Mixed 10m Air Rifle Prone events under the World Shooting Para Sport classification system.
However, her sudden passing has tragically ended her dream of competing in Japan and wearing the Sri Lankan national colours at one of Asia’s premier multi-sport events.
As Sri Lanka prepares for the Games, her absence will be deeply felt by fellow athletes, coaches and officials. Her story reflects the courage, perseverance and determination of para-athletes who overcome challenges in pursuit of sporting excellence.
The National Paralympic Committee extended its heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and all those who supported her sporting journey.
Though she will not have the opportunity to compete at Aichi-Nagoya, Niranjala Ranasinghe’s commitment to representing Sri Lanka will remain a poignant part of the nation’s para-sporting story.
May she rest in peace.
