Achinthya Shamen Kaluarachchi was named the Most Outstanding Male Player, while Aloys H. Sandithi Kusalya from the Western Province was named the Most Outstanding Female Player at the chess tournament of the 50th National Sports Festival, jointly organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Department of Sports Development.
The North Central Province won the men’s chess championship at the tournament held at the Torrington Grounds in Colombo, while the Western Province and Central Province secured second and third places, respectively.
The Western Province won the women’s championship, with the Southern Province and Central Province taking second and third places, respectively. A total of 112 players representing all nine provinces of the island participated in the tournament.
