Augustine George, Chairman of the Manchester Football Academy, states that the ‘Federation Cup’ international football tournament—organized by the Academy in collaboration with the Football Federation of Sri Lanka—will cost 10 million rupees. He noted that the objective of the tournament is to discover young talent and produce players capable of competing at the national level.
He stated this at a media briefing held at the Ministry of Sports, presided over by Football Federation President Jaswar Umar. The tournament, featuring 44 teams from seven provinces, will take place on the 9th, 10th, and 11th of next month at the Reid Avenue Racecourse grounds. Football teams from India, the Maldives, Seychelles, and Malaysia are also participating in the tournament.
The tournament, featuring Under-14 and Under-16 categories, is being conducted in accordance with international football regulations; arrangements have been made to award the winning team a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 200,000, while the runners-up will receive a trophy and Rs. 100,000.
In addition, the ‘Golden Boot’ award is presented to the player who scores the most goals, while separate special awards are given to players who demonstrate outstanding skills. The Manchester Football Academy has made arrangements to hold the semi-finals and the grand final under floodlights.
