COLOMBO: The remarkable journey of Sri Lanka’s world-class javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has been captured in a special biographical book, celebrating the life, determination and extraordinary rise of an athlete who has taken Sri Lankan athletics to an unprecedented level.
The book, titled “Adhishtanaye Ran Salakuna – Rumesh” (“The Golden Mark of Determination – Rumesh”), was officially launched in Colombo, providing readers with an insight into the sporting journey of the young athlete whose name has rapidly become synonymous with excellence in world javelin.
The launch comes at a particularly significant moment in Tharanga’s career.
At just 23, the Sri Lankan has enjoyed a remarkable 2026 season, establishing himself among the leading javelin throwers in the world. His performances have included a national-record 92.62m at the Rome Diamond League and a 92.07m victory at the prestigious Zurich Diamond League. World Athletics records the Zurich performance as the winning mark of the competition.
He subsequently created another piece of history by becoming the first Sri Lankan athlete to win the Diamond League Final, producing an 89.04m throw in Brussels.
His golden run continued in Budapest, where Tharanga won the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship men’s javelin title with a 91.09m effort, defeating a field featuring some of the world’s leading throwers.
The book therefore arrives at a defining chapter of a career that has moved at remarkable speed—from an emerging Sri Lankan talent to a thrower competing and winning on some of athletics’ biggest stages.
Beyond the distances and medals, the publication seeks to chronicle the determination, sacrifices, discipline and challenges behind Tharanga’s success. It offers an opportunity to look beyond the athlete standing on the throwing runway and understand the journey that brought him there.
Speaking at the launch, Tharanga outlined ambitions that extend well beyond his current achievements. He has set his sights on the 2028 Olympic Games and expressed his desire to challenge the Olympic javelin record, while also planning to continue competing through the 2032 and 2036 Games.
The timing of the book launch is particularly symbolic. Tharanga is now preparing for the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, following his World Ultimate Championship triumph.
From a young athlete chasing distance to a world-class performer carrying the hopes of a nation, “Adhishtanaye Ran Salakuna – Rumesh” records not merely a collection of victories, but a chapter in the making of one of Sri Lanka’s most significant sporting stories.
And, judging by the ambitions of the man at its centre, this may be only the first chapter.
