While plans were being formulated to win the upcoming SAFF Football Championship, Jaswar Umar, President of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka, was unanimously appointed as a Senior Vice President of the South Asian Football Federation during the SAFF Executive Committee meeting held in Thimphu, Bhutan.
All six member nations—India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, the Maldives, and Bangladesh—expressed unanimous support for the President of Sri Lanka Football; representatives from these countries stated that this serves as a testament to the respect commands within the South Asian football community and the international confidence placed in Sri Lankan football.
Following the nomination of Jaswar Umar, no counter-nominations were submitted by any South Asian nations. He has attracted significant attention in the football world by successfully elevating the Sri Lankan team to the 187th position in the FIFA world rankings—surpassing 20 other teams—within a short span of just two years.
It is noteworthy that this marks a rise in Sri Lanka’s football world ranking after 11 years; Jaswar had assumed the role of football administrator at a time when the national team had plummeted to the very bottom—ranking 207th globally—in 2024.
Jaswar Umar’s willingness to make bold administrative decisions has earned him the respect of the football community, and this new appointment has bolstered Sri Lanka’s aspirations of clinching the South Asian football title.
Jaswar also serves as a member of the FIFA World Football Development Committee and the Asian Football Development Committee.
