Sri Lankan women's team succeeded in defeating the Pakistan women's team in a bilateral ODI series—a feat achieved for the first time in 24 years.
Led by Chamari Athapaththu, the Sri Lankan team won the third ODI against the visiting Pakistan side by eight wickets, thanks to an all-round performance. With this victory, Sri Lanka clinched the three-match ODI series 2–1.
The last time the Sri Lanka women's team defeated Pakistan in a bilateral ODI series was during the series held in Sri Lanka in 2002.
As this series is part of the ICC Women's Championship, this victory enabled the Sri Lanka team to secure second place in the points table, pushing Pakistan down to third.
Invited to bat first, the Pakistan team was bowled out for 187 runs in 40 overs; Sri Lanka chased down the target in 37.2 overs, losing only two wickets
Although Vishmi Gunaratne—who had scored a magnificent century in the second match between the two sides—was dismissed for 12 runs yesterday, captain Chamari Athapaththu provided a rapid start, scoring 52 runs—her 20th ODI half-century—off just 38 balls, including seven fours and two sixes.
Chamari was dismissed as the second wicket fell at a team total of 85; subsequently, Hasini Perera joined Harshitha to build an unbroken 106-run partnership, steering the Sri Lankan team to victory. Harshitha, who scored 71 runs off 92 balls—including 11 fours—recorded her eighth half-century yesterday. Meanwhile, Hasini scored an unbeaten 50, featuring eight fours, marking her third half-century.
Chetana Vimukthi plunged the Pakistan team—who batted first—into a precarious position as early as the second over by claiming three wickets without conceding a single run.
Gul Feroza held one end firm, scoring 40 runs, while captain Fatima Sana—the innings' top scorer—accumulated 41 runs off 49 balls. Although Muneeba Ali and Najiha Alvi contributed 34 and 30 runs respectively, the Sri Lankan bowlers denied the remaining batters the opportunity to reach the 10-run mark.
With the ball, Kavisha Dilhari, Chamari Athapaththu, and Chethana Vimukthi claimed three wickets each. Chamari was named Player of the Match, while Harshitha was adjudged Player of the Series.
