Several Sri Lankan athletes are set to compete today in various track and field events at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland—a discipline where the country holds high hopes for medals.
Among them, Sri Lanka's javelin throw champion Rumesh Tharanga—who has recently garnered significant global attention—along with Sumedha Ranasinghe, will kick off their campaign by participating in the javelin throw qualifying round.
Eighteen athletes are set to compete in this event, which begins at 2:55 PM (local time) under Group A; the lineup includes Olympic gold medalists Neeraj Chopra (India) and Arshad Nadeem (Pakistan), as well as World Champion Anderson Peters (Grenada).
Kalinga Kumarage is set to compete in the semi-finals of the men's 400m event at 5:40 PM. Three semi-final races are scheduled for this event, and Kalinga will participate in the third race. He qualified for this stage after finishing second in the fifth heat of the preliminary round with a time of 46.28 seconds.
Madhushani Herath, who is competing in the women's triple jump final, will take to the field today at 11:55 PM (Sri Lanka time). Six athletes are participating in this event.
