Sri Lanka celebrated a proud moment on the global stage as para-athlete Palitha Bandara clinched a historic silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026, becoming the first athlete to deliver a podium finish for the Sri Lankan contingent at the ongoing Games.
Competing in the Men’s Para Discus Throw (F42-44/61-64 category), Bandara produced a remarkable performance, recording a personal best throw of 46.84 meters, securing second place among a competitive international field.
This outstanding achievement not only marked Sri Lanka’s first medal of the 2026 Games, but also reaffirmed Bandara’s status as one of the nation’s most consistent and inspiring para-athletes on the world stage.
Bandara, who previously made history at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games by becoming Sri Lanka’s first-ever para-sport medalist, has once again elevated the country’s reputation in international athletics.
