Sri Lanka’s Under-18 girls secured runner up

Sri Lanka’s Under-18 girls basketball team delivered a courageous performance to finish as runners-up in the FIBA Under-18 Asia Cup SABA Qualifiers 2026 after going down 83-57 to an unbeaten Indian side in the final at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo yesterday.

Despite facing the tournament’s strongest outfit, the Sri Lankan girls displayed determination and resilience throughout the competition, earning a well-deserved second-place finish in the regional championship.

India, who maintained an unbeaten record throughout the tournament, asserted their dominance from the outset and established a 46-32 advantage at halftime. The visitors continued to control proceedings in the second half, extending their lead to secure a convincing victory and claim the championship title.

Sri Lanka’s campaign was spearheaded by captain Binuthi Jayasinghe, whose leadership and performances were instrumental in the team’s impressive run to the final. She was ably supported by S. Sethwala, A. Hayaz, P. Chandrasekara, and T. Perera, all of whom made significant contributions during the tournament.

Although falling short in the final, Sri Lanka’s runners-up finish highlights the growing potential of the country’s young basketball talent and provides a strong foundation for future international competitions.
