Former Sri Lanka fullback Lakala Perera has been appointed as the Backs Coach of the Sri Lanka National Fifteens Rugby Team, adding a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the national setup.
A product of St. Peter’s College, Perera enjoyed a distinguished playing career, representing leading domestic clubs Havelocks Sports Club and CH & FC, in addition to earning national honours with Sri Lanka. Widely regarded as one of the country’s finest fullbacks, he built a reputation for his composure under pressure, tactical awareness, reliable handling, and attacking flair.
Perera has also established himself as a respected coach. Since 2024, he has been serving as a coach at St. Joseph’s College alongside former Sri Lanka international Dulanjana Wijesinghe. Under their guidance, the Josephian rugby programme has shown significant development and consistent progress over the past three seasons.
Throughout his playing career, Perera was admired for his leadership qualities, game management skills, and ability to influence matches from the back. His contributions at both club and international level earned him widespread respect within Sri Lankan rugby circles.
