Ex-Sri Lanka cricketer Avishka Gunawardena has resigned from his role at Sri Lanka Cricket’s High-Performance Centre (HPC), following a recent change in his coaching assignment, The Daily Morning Sports, reliably learns.
Gunawardena, 48, who had been functioning as the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team coach, was recently reassigned by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to take over as the Sri Lanka Under-19 team coach during an overhaul of the coaching set up affiliated to the HPC.
Gunawardena had been credited with successfully handling the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team in recent assignments, with several emerging players progressing under his watch.
However, following the decision to move him to the Under-19 setup, he has stepped down from his position at the HPC.
The former Ananda and SSC dashing left-handed opener represented his country in 61 ODIs and six Tests during an eight-year stint from 1998 to 2006.
His career was abruptly ended in 2007, when he joined the unofficial Indian Cricket League with Delhi Giants, leading to a ban that effectively ended his international playing days, prompting him to step into full-time coaching.
