Former Sri Lankan leg-spinner D. S. de Silva, a key member of the country’s inaugural Test team in 1982, has passed away at the age of 83, his family confirmed. He died in London.

De Silva captained Sri Lanka in two Test matches and holds the historic distinction of being the country’s first ODI cap and second Test cap.

A pioneering legs spinner, he became the first Sri Lankan bowler to take a five-wicket haul in a Test innings during the 1982 tour of Pakistan and later captained the team as its oldest Test captain in 1983.

After retiring, he served as Chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket from 2009 to 2011.

De Silva is widely regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s finest leg-spinners and a trailblazer in the nation’s cricketing history.
