Sri Lanka Set to Face Pakistan in Final Women’s World Cup 2025 Group Clash in Colombo

Sri Lanka will lock horns with Pakistan in what promises to be an emotional final group-stage encounter of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, on Friday.

For Chamari Athapaththu’s Sri Lankan side, this fixture is more than just another match — it’s their last shot at survival in the tournament. With only one win from six games and a net run rate of –1.035, the hosts must secure a commanding victory to keep their faint semifinal hopes alive.

Pakistan, meanwhile, arrive in Colombo already eliminated from the competition. Winless so far, Nida Dar’s team will be determined to salvage pride and avoid ending their World Cup campaign without a victory.

High Stakes for the Hosts

Sri Lanka’s campaign has been a story of inconsistency and frustration. Despite flashes of brilliance from Athapaththu and opener Hasini Perera — who leads the side’s scoring charts with 182 runs — the team has struggled for momentum. Their bowlers have shown fight but have often been let down by rain interruptions and middle-order collapses.

Speaking ahead of the clash, captain Athapaththu said,

“We know what’s at stake. Every ball counts now. We have to play fearless cricket and focus on what we can control.”

A big win over Pakistan could still keep Sri Lanka mathematically alive, depending on other results later in the day.

Pakistan’s Search for Redemption

For Pakistan, the campaign has been one to forget, yet one filled with lessons. Despite spirited performances from all-rounder Fatima Sana — who has taken 10 wickets in the tournament — the side’s batting frailties have cost them dearly.

Captain Nida Dar admitted the tournament hadn’t gone as planned but emphasized the importance of finishing strong.

“We owe it to ourselves and to our supporters to fight till the end. Winning this last game would mean a lot to the group,” she said.

Neutral Venue, Familiar Conditions

Interestingly, although India is the official host of the 2025 Women’s World Cup, Pakistan’s matches are being held in Colombo under special arrangements due to cross-border security concerns. The Premadasa surface has been tricky throughout the tournament — slow, with rain interruptions affecting multiple matches.

With overcast skies forecast again, both sides will be wary of the Duckworth–Lewis factor.

The Key Battles

  • Chamari Athapaththu vs Fatima Sana: Experience meets youthful aggression. Sri Lanka’s talismanic skipper will be key against Pakistan’s in-form seamer.

  • Hasini Perera’s resilience: The top-order batter has been Sri Lanka’s most consistent performer; another steady innings could anchor their chase.

  • Spin duel: In Colombo’s humid conditions, spinners from both camps — particularly Inoka Ranaweera and Nashra Sandhu — could prove decisive.

Beyond the Points Table

While Sri Lanka fights for survival and Pakistan for pride, this fixture also symbolizes the growing competitiveness in women’s cricket across South Asia. Both boards have invested heavily in the women’s game, and despite contrasting fortunes, the teams’ spirit and visibility continue to inspire a new generation of players.

What’s Next

A Sri Lankan win could keep them mathematically in contention for the semifinals, though they’ll need results elsewhere to go their way. For Pakistan, a victory would be a much-needed morale boost as they turn their focus toward the upcoming bilateral series and the 2026 T20 World Cup cycle.
