Sri Lanka’s lone competitor on Day 3 of the World Athletics Championships 2025, Nuwan Indika Gamage, gave a spirited performance in the Men’s T44 100 metres qualifying round in New Delhi today.
Gamage, who came into the event with a personal best of 11.45 seconds, clocked 11.86 seconds to finish fourth in his heat. Despite the strong run, the time was not sufficient to secure a place in the finals, which required a faster qualifying mark.
The 28-year-old sprinter is no stranger to international success. He won a bronze medal in the same category at the 2024 Asian Para Athletics Championships in Japan, a milestone that boosted his reputation as one of Sri Lanka’s leading para athletes.
In New Delhi, Gamage displayed determination from the start, holding his form against a competitive field featuring some of the world’s top para sprinters. Though the result ends his campaign in the 100 metres this year, his presence once again highlights Sri Lanka’s growing footprint in global para athletics.
Officials from Sri Lanka’s athletics federation praised his effort, noting that competing on the world stage provides invaluable experience for future meets. Gamage expressed gratitude for the support from his coaching team and well-wishers back home, vowing to return stronger for upcoming regional and international events.
His performance stands as an inspiration for young Sri Lankan para athletes, proving that persistence and dedication can carry them onto the world stage—even when the finish line doesn’t bring a medal.
