India, still smarting from their loss at Lord’s, found renewed belief with a gritty performance at Old Trafford. They will be desperate to retain the silverware with a win at the Kennington Oval.
England, meanwhile, have been forced into changes. The absence of Ben Stokes, sidelined with a right shoulder injury, is a significant blow. Jofra Archer also misses out — a relief for India, who will be glad to avoid his extra pace. Liam Dawson remains an unpredictable inclusion; he offered little threat with the ball in the last Test, though his resilience with the bat was notable. Brydon Carse also sits out — not especially incisive with the ball, but a gutsy lower-order contributor.
Jacob Bethell at No. 6, Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton, and seamer Josh Tongue are all included in the England lineup. With the Australian summer on the horizon, these players will be eager to cement their spots. India, therefore, cannot afford to be complacent — new players with intent often prove disruptive.
India’s bowling, however, has been inconsistent. Allowing Ravindra Jadeja to become the linchpin of the middle order highlights issues elsewhere. Washington Sundar’s inclusion is a notable boost; his all-round capabilities, paired with Jadeja’s experience, could give England some sleepless nights.
That said, India’s comeback at Old Trafford was more than a great escape — it was a statement. The grit they showed will undoubtedly influence selection decisions going forward.
Apart from Stokes’ forced omission, England’s inclusion of Bethell, Overton, and Tongue may reflect a strategic shift in mindset by the selectors.
Will India risk Jasprit Bumrah, who is managing an ankle niggle? Prasidh Krishna is fit and eager. In the spin department, India are well-stocked — a definite advantage. This may make Kuldeep Yadav’s inclusion unlikely unless conditions demand variation.
India’s batting appears solid. There’s speculation about changes at No. 3, especially with Rishabh Pant out of the series due to injury. While unlikely, Sai Sudharsan could be considered for that position, particularly as India look for a backup keeper.
Overall, India seem the more settled side. The absence of Stokes — both as a leader and a dynamic all-rounder — leaves a noticeable void in the English camp.
